Eric Church Boxers Review: Desperate Man

Eric Church, unlike most country music stars, doesn't seem afraid of pushing the genre in different directions. In his last two albums, beginning with 2001's Sinners Like Me, he's created a collection of genre-bending songs that incorporate rock and blues influences, as well as the country grit. The result is a fusion of styles that have produced many of the most popular and loved songs of the genre that range from "Carolina" to the arena rock kings He has helped raise the profile of The Outsiders.

Desperate Man, Church’s latest album, is a wonderful example of this type of musical expression. This album is packed with songs that don't shy away from convey emotion. They also confront the issues of our time with honesty and confessions. It's a testament to the ability of his lyrics to express emotion and compelling music that isn't an obstacle to his artistic credibility.

Church's track, titled "Eponymous", was co-written by him and Joanna Cotton. His voice is a tense squeak through the guitar strings but he is able to give a smooth delivery. The song serves as a fitting analogy for the turbulent world that we live in today, where violence and fear have become the norm, and the people suffering from these incidents aren't as well-known as they ought to be.

He's not afraid to share the dark aspects of his life. The album also includes his brother's suicide and the shooting on Route 91. The album is deeply affected by the loss of his father. "Why I'm Not You," an outstanding track, is an emotional song that is a plea to keep him in mind. The album's most moving track is "Russian Roulette", which sees Church struggling with the notion that music triggers memories, but it's not a source of nostalgia.

On the heels of several songs that are a hit and an album that is a no-one, Church is on the verge of launching a tour. He'll be performing across all over the world, performing as a support for a number of great acts. These include Kacey Musgraves, Brandy Clark and Brothers Osborne.
